This project emerged from insights gained during my involvement in the development of the first digital readers. This experience ignited a fascination within me regarding the profound influence of technology on communication, juxtaposed against the enduring influence of the printed page, and in particular the interactions of readers with writers through marginalia. Over the past years, I have immersed myself in literary archaeology, unearthing significant instances of contemporary marginalia. This endeavor has culminated in The Pages Project, the result of the extensive archive I’ve cultivated, comprising over a thousand examples, established in collaboration with Bay Area bookstores.
Through an intricate photographic process (backlighting to create a recto-verso montage of text, marks, and paper) The Pages Project print edition delves into the realms of writing, reading, and the compelling potency of the archive itself. The project explores a distinct and largely uncharted landscape, one that offers profound insights into the evolution of communication.
